After a long, gruelling night shift waitressing at a local pub, my sister Carol (a hard-working, single mom) finally left work at almost 4:00 am, completely exhausted. The girls were both taken to the hospital; one for a minor burn on her hand, and both for smoke inhalation.

Carol finally turned to watch her home go up in flames,
as the windows exploded from the scorching heat...
and she realized that they'd lost everything that night.

The rest of the night was a blur - police and fire officials, concern from her neighbors, and phone calls to the landlord and us - her family. She spent the early morning hours at the hospital waiting for her kids to be released, and realizing they had literally nothing left but the clothes on their backs, shell-shocked and exhausted, they made the hour-long drive to our house to stay.
